A bit of a slow day in the sheep pens following on from Mondays downpours which certainly seemed to dampen the enthusiasm for the finished sheep this week.
Trade took a dip at the end of last week as a result of the lack of demand for the finished product on the shelves. We have seen this in the past as the catering and wholesale trade tighten up as many consumers are saving for Christmas. The overall average sat around 300p kg which is far from a bad trade in comparison to what we have seen in the past, but it is a bit lower than recent weeks trading. I have no doubt that this will firm up for the Christmas period but when this happens is anyone’s guess. Top on the day was taken by S Fagg at 365p kg for some shapely Beltex crosses with the top price in the lump taken by C & J Georgetti & Sons at £176 hd.

OTM Cattle and Cull Cows – 98 Sold
Nothing like a seriously wet day to concentrate minds, housing plans, and feed questions for the coming season. More cows forward, and a decent fleshed entry of beef cows but a lean collection of culls from the dairy section in general. Rates holding strong with customers keen for both feeding and slaughter stock which reflects industry concerns over how much stock is to come this autumn. Certainly, with housing, scanning and weaning around the corner we shall see more numbers, nationally, begin to come forward.
The best beef cows, meat, or feed, still well over 300p with the best heavyweights up over £2500, topping at £2885 from A J Strand & Sons. Demand for feeding cows will continue strongly with buyers eager to get cows onto the grub now to be ready early in the New Year.
