Report on trade: I have said for some time that one day the West will come out in force for lambs, when everyone wakes up to the fact that the grass keep is there, and that the turnips are now growing into a worthwhile crop. Well, this day was last Friday. More buyers around the ring, coupled with a stronger entry in terms of quality returned a good increase in price from the previous store lamb sale a fortnight before. The average price this week was £102 head with a good number of lambs well in excess of £100 for those with strength. Only long-term types below this figure. Top on the day was taken by M Hooker of Lodgelands at £132 head for some super Texel lambs. W J Hurley did sell one very large lamb at £160 but I do not think we can call this one a store though! Several others sold lambs over £125, including Maytham Wharf, W J Hurley, E Morris & Son and S C Gammon. A marvellous run of close to 400 Texel lambs from SJM Evans sold to £124, averaging £110.27! Lambs for longer farming were traded from £90-100 head but more generally at the higher end of this figure, as this was what most buyers had come to secure this week.
Romney wethers were a stronger show than last time with some very good sheep penned topping at £117 from Alan Body, closely followed by A J Thompson & Sons at £115. The more longer-term Romneys sold from £85-95 this week, a nice lift which often happens as the season progresses.
As the breeding sheep become scarce in the pens the trade seems to have taken a lift with buyers plentiful. In the ewe teg section, we saw Blue Texel crosses from P Tampin to £180 and Aberfield crosses from J Coe to £200 and £195. A super run of North Country Mules from Swallow Mill Farms topped at £218 with every pen in the run sold over £200 per head. Suffolk x Mules from D Mackelden Ltd to £210 followed by Suffolk x Mules from E W & R E Hanks to £200 per head.
In the breeding ewe section to kick off we had Romneys to £140 from M L & M P Holgate and Texel crosses flock aged from P Tampin to £150. Charollais crosses flock aged from E W Homewood to £156 with Mules from the same home to £130 and followed by 3-4 lamb Mules from D & J Murray to £132 with Romneys from the same home to £134.
Please inform me of any breeding sheep you have to sell in the coming weeks with plenty of customers remaining on the lookout for more numbers.
