Romney Day this year certainly had more favourable selling conditions than we saw 12 months ago with no real restrictions placed upon us by the dreaded BTV virus. With a reduced entry in terms of overall numbers, and an increased buying presence, we saw a great improvement in all sections of the sale from the ewe lambs to the shearlings, and also the rams. The ewe lambs were kindly judged by David & Rhona Thompson and the first placed pen was presented by Mr Harry Metcalf, selling for £141 head to Caleb Rayner, Essex. Overall, the quality of the lambs was improved on 12 months ago for the lambs that were strong enough for running on for breeding, with the smaller, later lambs selling for prices more in line with the store trade on any other Friday sheep sale. Other strong ewe lambs of note topped at £128 for Langrish Farmers, £123 from K Lukehurst and £122 from H V Link Partnership.
Romney day was a flyer with the ewe tegs averaging £172 per head and topping at £202 for a quality run from Caleb Rayner. The best ewe tegs regularly £180 – £200 with a few high-level mentions for Lovejoy Farms Partnership and G Homewood both to £200; H G Tompsett & Sons and P H & P E Skinner to £195 and S E Lane & Partners to £190. Second quality remained well sold with majority of these £160 – £180 with only a very few sold below these figures. The breeding ewes saw plenty of interest also with top spot taken by J Lukehurst with 3 lamb ewes to £159 and in close attendance W Cooke & Son with 3 lamb ewes again to £148. The strongest were all over £120 per head with the second quality £80 – £110 per head on most occasions.
An overall success for the breed with the sheep looking well in the pens and plenty of happy faces seen from both sellers and purchasers on the day.
Again, the same sentiments apply in the Ram ring as with the commercial female sections with a slightly improved trade to last year. Top spot on the day was the champion ram which was shown by Lovejoy Farm Partnership and was purchased by Alan Barr at £1,600. Other rams from the same pen of three sold for £1000 twice. Several more rams were sold in excess of £600 head this year and, with all included, the overall average was £603 head.
