Report on trade: Ewe lamb sale was with us again last Friday and almost 5,000 sheep were penned in total. We saw a smaller entry compared to last year, but this was predominantly due to less store lambs on offer, as we have already seen many of these earlier this year. The trade for the 2,200 store lambs on offer was slightly improved with the recent rains allowing more buyers to bid with confidence that they will have keep for them going forward. Top on the day was £128 from H Crump and Sons and most strong lambs were still over £100 head with the general average type of lambs from £90-100.
In the ewe lamb department, the show was kindly sponsored by Portequip Ltd this year, and first prize was a superb creep feeder that was on display in the market on the day. This was taken by D Howard Farms, whose superb run of Suffolk x Mule ewe lambs topped out at £164 and averaged £147 for their 400 on offer. These lambs were a real credit to Stewart and will grow into some superb ewes for those who purchased them. We look forward to seeing their progeny in the coming years. The overall run of ewe lambs showed signs that they had a tougher summer with grazing running tight for farmers across not just the South East, but most of the UK this year. The trade averaged roughly the same as last year and this would probably equate to a slight improvement as the overall size of the lambs on offer was slightly less than recent years. Other runs of note in the Suffolk category topped at £138 from W J Hurley and £132 from E & M E Brundrett, with Mr Alex Pynn selling Texel crosses to £135.
The largest show of breeding sheep seen so far this autumn with plenty of interest around the ring. Our first show of North Country Mule shearlings kicked off by Kingswood and topped at £200 per head, with top call for Mules £205 from W Cole, with the majority of the others £175 – £195 per head looking well sold considering the quality. Suffolk x Mule shearlings topped at £221 per head from J P M Rural Services followed by Dan Mackelden Ltd to £220 and £212 per head. All of the strongest Suffolk x Mules reached over £200 per head with just a few pens which need further strengthening ahead of tupping. Super smart Texels from G Husk took top spot on the day reaching £250 per head. We intend on having breeding sheep available most weeks now going forward with a good run of 240 North Country Mules shearling from Plumpton College this Friday 12th September.
