A big entry of store lambs and breeding sheep late in the season attracted the biggest attendance of buyers of the season.
Store lambs were a good trade throughout with an overall average of £75. A small selection of ewe lambs topped at £100 for a pen of Suffolk x Mule from G B Richards & Son while a pen of meat lambs topped the market at £101 from the top run of the day with 267 mainly Charollais cross stores averaging a favourable £85.80 from James Wayman. Medium crossbred stores generally sold in the £75 to £80 bracket and majority of small long term sorts £60 to £70. Again, the best of the Romney wethers looked well sold in excess of £80 and an overall average of £71.
A selective breeding trade with the best of the ewe tegs around £150 but generally buyers looking for average quality at handy money. Plenty of customers for the breeding ewes on offer and while no exceptional high figures attracted prices in excess of feeding and slaughter value.
Rams were an absolute flying trade with the sheep alleyways packed with potential buyers. Best Continental rams in excess of £500 and topping at £790 for quality Charollais teg from B J Baker while Suffolk’s topped at £560 from J Hammond.
The Charollais rams took the pick of the trade with 31 tegs averaging £510.
