Finished Sheep
876 Sold
Top price per kilo – 193p: Top price per head – £91.50 – P Mills
Report on trade: A small entry of lambs forward today selling on an improved trade to the last couple of weeks but it must be said that a greater proportion of this weeks finished sheep were heavier and better meat than we saw last week. Nationally numbers were starting to show a decline last week and this has in turn caused trade to lift to a level that is some 24p/kg and £10/hd above the levels we saw for the same week last year. Well meated export grade lambs were in short supply but the top of these were some 41kg lambs from CS Wills Trust that sold to £79/hd (193p/kg) but the best lambs sold on the day were the heavy weights which averaged 175p/kg to a top price of £91.50 (twice) for Mr Paul Mills for 51kg lambs, closely followed by WG Watkins & Sons at £90 for some cracking 50kg lambs.

Cull Ewes and Rams
686 sold
Report on trade: A smaller entry of ewes this week but once again several leaner sorts in the pens which were well sold to the grazing buyers. Meated sorts were slightly improved on last week but it would be fair to say the best ewes were better than last weeks best ewes! Best end of the ewes sold to £81 from Roundhurst Farms and the majority of grazing types sold between £35 and £50/hd.
Top Prices:
Texel Cross Ewes form Roundhurst Farms sold to £81/hd, Crossbred Ewes to £75 from M Hooker & Sons, Mules to £65/hd from the same vendor and Romneys to £59.50 from S Weller & Sons.
Store and Breeding Sheep
7352 sold
Report on trade: Store lambs a little less money with prices easier by some £2 to £3 per head, partly reflecting the reduced returns available in the finished market and partly the relatively high percentage of small long term lambs as some producers come towards the end of their runs for this season. Nevertheless the best of the lambs attracted prices in excess of £60 and up to £66 for Texel crosses, consigned by Watership Down Partnership. P H & P E Skinner and L F Crisford & Sons while the best of the Romneys sold around the £55 per head mark. Smaller poorer bred lambs proved the most difficult with the majority ranging in the £40 to £50 per head.

Who is the Vicar ?? – our new Rural Business Chaplin
Many regular livestock market users have asked this question in recent weeks since Rev. Chris Hodkgins started attending the market on Tuesdays. Chris has been appointed Rural Business Chaplin for the South East, alongside his role as vicar for Rolvenden, by the Church of England, to provide spiritual support for those living and working in our rural community.
Chris has a farming and agricultural background and understands many of the problems faced by those living and working in the rural community. Please do not be afraid to say “hello” to him and make him feel welcome in Ashford.
His appointment is supported by FCN, the Farming Community Network, who also provide support to individuals and families again living and working in the rural community. This bodies Helpline number is 03000 111 999.
Locally FCN is always looking for volunteers to help with their work and Anthony Hyde on 01795 830355 will be pleased to hear from anyone prepared to help. Visit www.fcn.org.uk to help understand the work done by FCN.
