Finished Sheep

3,639 Sold

New seasons lambs: Top price per kilo – 267p – MB Farms: Top price per head £95.50 – L Stevens & Sons

Report on trade: Considerably more lambs on offer this week with nearly 1000 penned. Numbers have increased nationally and this has had an impact on the trade, bringing the price back by approximately £5 per head. This is in line with the hogget trade, showing a lack of wholesale demand for sheep meat in general, presumably due to the Ramadan fasting period currently taking place. More lambs are expected to come forward in the coming weeks, please advise us of your entries.

Hoggets Top price per kilo – 224p – T Hope: Top price per head – £101 – W F Kirk & P Gorringe

Report on trade: Over 2500 hoggets penned again this week, which are huge numbers forward for the time of year. This was almost 2000 more penned than the corresponding week of 2018 when prices were at their peak.

The best were still well sold on the day with a very mixed entry on offer with all shapes and sizes represented. The best sold made £90-100  with top price of £101 taken jointly by P Gorringe and W F Kirk. Handier weights were less money than in recent weeks with big numbers on offer across the country and the Muslim fasting period taking an effect on prices.

Sheep sales here in Ashford are supported by buyers representing a large cross section of abattoirs throughout the country. Please ensure your FABBL status is up to date and if you are not FABBL assured seriously consider becoming so – certain buyers are restricted to the purchase of only farm assured stock.

Cull Ewes and Rams

627 sold

Report on trade: Over 600 ewes penned and as we saw in all other sections, the Muslim fasting period has taken its toll on the prices achieved. Demand for ewes is certainly flat and with big numbers on offer nationally, trade will always be affected. Best ewes to £90 from J Metianu.

Store and Breeding Sheep

Report on trade: A much reduced entry of store hoggets late in the season with medium Texel cross selling exceptionally well up to £76 from P A Reeve and Romney wethers to £68 from Fincham Farms.

Cull Cows and Bulls

63 Sold

Report on trade: A few less forward this week but nevertheless an excellent entry for the time of year and some good flesh on offer on some late yarded cows. There is no doubt that numbers nationally and regionally are tightening considerably as stock moves to grass, silaging is well underway and June is around the corner!

Demand again flying for all grades with few of the very best but, similarly, fewer at the bottom end. Rates are good but with seemingly good supplies of clean beef still coming forward for the moment perhaps we haven’t really seen the high spots that many, including myself, predicted. Time will tell and I still think all beef supplies will tighten during this summer.

Some good beef cows readily made 125-140p per kg with the leaner grazing types showing no let up in demand. Farm assurance less of a factor in these tight times but the general advice remains to sell non assured as feeders to those who can graze/feed for the 90 required days.

Top calls included Limousin cross at 142p and gross £935 from R F & E A Simmons and 126p £987 M J Ashworth; Simmental cross 138p £925 (Non FA) T Lyle & Ptrs, 135p £1103 R F & E A Simmons, 129p £957 E Chantler & Sons and 128p £987 M J Ashworth; British Blue cross 135p £915 E Chantler & Son and 132p £1006 (Non FA) A J Britton; Sussex 134p, 130p(2), 129p £912, £907 Bosney Farms; South Devon 132p, 126p (Non FA) T Lyle & Ptrs and 127p, 121p £987 W E Baines; Lincoln Red 129p, 124p A W Vincent and 129p, 120p (Non FA) N Morgan with Hereford cross 125p £842 (Non FA) F Henderson.

A few more dairy culls this week and well received. Not so much flesh on the backs of grazing stock but the yard cattle in good condition.

British Friesian 129p(2), 127p, 125p, 124p £957, £923 Debden Court Farms; 124p, 121p £973 B J Goodsell & Son; Holstein Friesian 124p, 121p £973 W F Farms; 120p, 119p, 118p, 116p(2) £1003, £964, £936, £907 Appleton (Ledger) Farms.

Just the one lean Blonde bull forward which made 114p.
