Sheep sales reports

Finished Sheep – 2,885 Sold

Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903

Top price per kilo – 246p Mrs C A Worley; Top price per head – £110 – Mrs C A Worley.

Report on trade: A larger entry of hoggets met a slightly stronger trade than last week, despite the slightly lower average returned as a result of a larger percentage of sheep in the heavy category (60% of entry was 46kgs and above). Several pens of sheep were sold well in excess of £100 this week with a tremendous run from the heavyweights from L J & J P Bolton making to top of £105.50 and to an average of £100.30 for 149 animals. Over weights of note included a run from Mr P Gorringe selling to £101.50 for some 59kg Suffolk crosses.

Handy weight sheep were in short supply yesterday, and were also short nationally, therefore the prices reflected this through the weight range 36-45kgs. Some very smart 41kg Beltex from Mrs C A Worley sold to 246p (£101), 36kg continentals from Mr M Atfield sold to 212p (£76.50), and some 39kg continentals from D & K Taylor sold to 212p (£82.50).

Over 100 new season lambs on offer today with an increased level of demand this week with lambs selling up to 253p from Mr J Farrant (37kgs @ £93.50). Overall the average returned at 236p. Please advise us of any consignments of new season lambs over the next few weeks.

Cull Ewes and Rams – 515 Sold

Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903

Report on trade: A flying trade throughout the entry. Numbers are short across the country and all sorts in demand. Several ewes over £100 with some reaching £137, the best price we have seen for over a year for some super Texels from Mr T Healy. Other Texels to £124 and £122 from Kingswood Farmers, and K V Potter respectively. Demand is strong at the moment and trade is on fire so our advice is to sell.

Texel to £137 from Mr T Healy, Suffolk to £115.50 from L J & P J Bolton, Mules to £93 from the same vendor and Romneys to £97 from Mr T Ashworth.

Store and Breeding Sheep – 278 Sold

Auctioneer: John Rossiter 07557 392903

Report on trade: A smaller entry again today of end of season stores, with the entry being made up of a lot of long term sorts. However, some of the better sorts still sold in excess of £70 to a top of £75.20 from Mr P Taylor, closely followed at  £74 from Mr P Tassle.

Sock Lambs – 80 Sold

Auctioneer: Mark Cleverdon 07748 202688

Report on trade: Again a similar sized entry to recent Tuesdays and comments on the trade are very similar too. Stronger lambs made £25 to £50. Medium sized lambs made £12 to £24 but less demand for younger and smaller lambs which again were making less than £10. Averages £50 to £2 Av £13.66.

Vendors please note – please ensure when bringing lambs to market your stock are all fit, healthy, not scouring with dry navels.

Cull Cows and Bulls – 47 Sold

Auctioneer: Peter Kingwill – 07795 200357

Report on trade: A similar story to last week with another good trade for the cows but only a short entry to take advantage of the days prices. Meat and feeders were all wanted and producers are strongly advised to have a good look at non performers and cull before turn out to grass to take advantage of weight and finish.

Again, very short of beef cows with the feeding trade strong. Smart Sussex from Piper Farms made to 130p, Limousin to 116p (£985) M J Ashworth and pure Sussex to 115p from W T Kemp.

British Friesian 112p (3) and (£854) from PHR Farms, Holsteins to 114p J W Boyd & Sons, 108p (£844) M W Goddard and Jerseys 72p Hickson Bros.

All bulls wanted if fleshed and we saw Limousin to 100p and Charolais grossing to £946.

Store Cattle – 592 Sold

Auctioneer: Elwyn Davies 07710 803901

Report on trade: The largest entry of the season saw decent prices and a good attendance of buyers competing for all breeds, age and quality on offer. The trade has eased slightly on the prices available a month ago, with the reduced returns available in the finished market and weight restrictions imposed by the major abattoirs having an impact on the heavier and more forward store cattle returns.

The best bred beef single suckled yearlings however were in demand with the majority of steers ranging from £800 to £950 and heifers generally £700 to £850. Again, a good selection of native breeds were on offer with the Aberdeen Angus and Hereford crosses attracting plenty of interest and competition.

New TB movement rules as from 6th April 2016

DEFRA are introducing a Post-Movement Testing policy for cattle moving into any Low Risk Area from herds located in High Risk Areas, Edge Areas and Wales.

Low Risk Areas – where routine surveillance takes place every 4 years – Kent, West Sussex, Surrey, Essex, Greater London, Hertfordshire and Eastern Counties. Edge Areas – Parts of East Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

High Risk Areas – Parts of East Sussex, Dorset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, and all Western Counties.

Bovines moving from High or Edge Areas to Low Risk Areas must be post-movement tested between 60-120 days of joining the new herd.

Animals will not be allowed to move off their destination holding until they have completed a negative post-movement test, unless the movement is directly to slaughter or to a licensed or approved finishing unit.

Hobbs Parker Auctioneers will identify in their catalogues and at the point of sale the status of the area from which cattle have been consigned.

All cattle of all ages are involved and young calves, whether pre-movement tested or not due to age, will require to be post-movement tested between 60-120 days.  Costs of testing are the responsibility of the purchaser, though if a routine DEFRA surveillance test is due then this can be utilised.

Only cattle from the High and Edge Areas moved to Low Risk Areas will be required to be tested.  This, in no way, affects other cattle on the destination holding.

Holdings on an annual testing routine in Low Risk Areas do not require stock to be post-movement tested following a sale/movement.

Failure to complete a post-movement test in the 60-120 day period will constitute an offence under the Animal Health Act and would result in a herd closure restriction.

If vendors or purchasers have any questions concerning the above please do not hesitate to contact our Market Office.
