Report on trade: A good entry of store lambs and with 20 keen buyers at ringside trade was strong and competitive throughout with the best prices recorded this season. Crossbred stores averaged £75 with 23% of the total entry grossing in excess of £80 and up to £96 for Blue Texel wethers from Mrs J Lukehurst. Ewe lambs made up to £95.50 for Charollais crosses from J Potts. Romney wethers sold particularly well to average £68 and topped at £83 from a quality run of 284 which averaged £80.36 from H Metcalfe.
An abundance of keep in other parts of the country and a continuing strong trade for the finished product the main contributing factors to these unprecedented high prices for stores at this time of the year. The ewe tegs did not achieve the exceptional high prices of the previous sale but the entry of mainly second draw sheep met a very decent trade. The best attracted prices in excess of £120 and up to £139 for Suffolk x Mules from Stone Farms, £134 for North Country Mules from Swallow Mill Farms and £137 for Texel from T Lyle & Ptnrs.
A small entry of draft ewes topped at £80 for flock aged Charollais crosses from Passmore Coombes.
