Report on trade: The largest entry of store lambs this season attracted a few more customers at ringside and trade was competitive throughout with prices firming slightly on recent weeks particularly at the stronger end of the sale. Generally prices are now on a par with last year with the best stores £62 plus and topping at £66 for a pen of superb Charollais crosses from Wey Street Farm and a pen of store Texel crosses to £65 from H Crump & Son. Medium sorts sold readily with the majority £55 to £60 and small long term stores £45 to £53.

The ewe teg trade remains selective although there were a few more customers at ringside for the best but second and third quality sorts proving difficult to sell. The stronger Mules made up to £120 from Brodie Farms while a big percentage of the lessor quality sorts ranging from £80 to £100.

The Annual Show & Sale of Pedigree Beltex, held in conjunction with the Central Beltex Club, saw a quality entry of Beltex sheep presented for sale here at Ashford. Judge James Bianchi’s champion Merton Hall Daisy Daisy ET from E D Jones, Cottenham sold to local breeder P Davies, Bilsington for £450. Reserve overall champion and champion ram teg Merton Hall Donald Duck from the same vendor sold to Miss H Dent, Maidstone for £480. Top priced Beltex on the day went to E D Jones for a ram teg Glenpark Dagger ET at £600 bought by K Sheilds, Bexhill, Sussex.

The pedigree Beltex ram tegs averaged £473 with pedigree ewe tegs averaging £242.

A wide selection of good quality commercial rams were forward for sale with a total of 91 sold with an average price of £302.97 all in. A more buoyant trade than the previous sale with tupping getting ever closer. Texel ram tegs including a handful of Blue Texels sold to £380 (x6) from N A Balcomb & Son Charollais with selling to £380 again from the Balcombs. Suffolks topped the commercial trade at £540 from the Balcombs and again the  Beltex x Charollais, sold to £340 from the same family.

C F Fuggle sold Suffolks to £400 and W Stewart Wood £360, B J Baker and N C & C G Hedges both sold Charollais to £350
