Report on trade: A similar entry of sheep for the special show and sale of Romneys met a very selective trade with customers keen for the best while second and third quality stock proved more difficult and sold at discounted prices.
The ewe lambs were not the quality of recent years with the recent dry weather and lack of keep having an impact as reflected in the overall average figures. The best on offer attracted prices in excess of £70 with top prize winners up to £85 from N A Balcomb & Son while the next grade down sold around £60 and the bottoms at store value.
The ewe tegs attracted more interest than the lambs with several more customers at ringside. The best tegs on offer sold in excess of £110 and up to £122 for second prize winners from PJ Hewett while smaller and second quality sorts generally ranged from £80 to £100.
The majority of flock aged ewes attracted prices in excess of slaughter and grazing value with 1 lambers topping at £79 from J Lukehurst, 3 lambers to £72 from Les Ramsden and 3 to 4 lambers up to £64 from W Cooke & Son (Farmers)
The Romney Sheepbreeders Society show and sale of ram tegs had an entry of 61 tegs. Judge for the morning Jim Lukehurst, Wye worked has way efficiently through the classes selecting prize winners as set out below.
