Report on trade: The largest sale of the season attracted a good attendance of potential buyers and the best trade so far with competitive bidding throughout. While the best store lambs on offer sold readily in excess of £62.00 and up to £67.20 for a pen of smart Charollais crosses from L E Humphreys and Sons. The medium and longer term lambs benefitted the most from strong demand and where probably dearer by some £3 to £4 per head on recent weeks. Medium crossbred lambs generally made £55 to £60 and only very small longer term sorts below £52.00. An increased number of Romney wethers were on offer this week with fleshed sorts topping £66.80 from H Metcalfe and the best stores made £55.00 to £60.00.
A small entry of Suffolk x Mule ewe lambs sold well with a run of 200 from D Howard Farms Ltd taking the pick of the trade selling from £70 to £73.
Trade for ewe tegs of all breeds and qualities was just a little improved with more customers around the ring brought forward, perhaps by a little more grass and by the advancing season. Fewer Suffolk x Mules are now forward and these enjoyed the best of the trade selling to £119.00 from E W & R E Hanks.
Still good numbers of North County Mules forward and values were a little improved. The best wanted with a smart run from Brodie Farms making to £125 and rest £108 to £115 in general. Plenty of tegs still £95 to £105 with smaller types £85 to £95.
We saw an improved trade for breeding ewes with young Beltex cross ewes topping at £118 from J & V Weeks and Romney 3 to 4 lambers up to £64 from Langrish Farmers.
A fantastic entry with rams to suit all buyers, a total of 167 sold on the day returning an overall average of £302.40.
