Report on trade: A similar entry in both size and quality to the previous sale 2 weeks ago with several runs of strong store lambs available. Trade was brisk throughout with overall prices firming by some £5 per head.
The best stores sold readily in excess of £70, medium sorts made £58 to £64 and only small long term sorts below £55. Crossbred lambs topped at £72.50 for Suffolk x Mule wethers from H J Hecks & Son and Romney wethers looked well sold up to £64.50 from H G Tompsett & Sons Ltd. Ewe lambs made up to £74 for Suffolk x Mules from L E Humphreys & Sons.
A small entry of ewe tegs sold well with Texels topping at £130 from P H & P E Skinner and Texel x Romney up to £113 from R Stannard.
A mixed entry of flock aged breeding ewes with the majority purchased for tupping with young Romney ewes topping at £93 from P H & P E Skinner and Texel crosses making up to £70 from D M Farms.
Plenty of choice for ram buyers with a total of 90 sold on the day on a mixed trade with strongest selling well and less well framed and showy types a little harder work on the day.
Suffolk’s have certainly been the trade of the season and today was no exception with them topping at £430 from W Stewart Wood, returning an average of £361.43 Texel’s sold to £360 from C W Baldock averaging £200.83. Beltex cross rams sold to £200 from N A Balcomb & Son averaging £160. A mixed entry of Charollais sold to £110 while Romney’s continued to be harder work with a top price of £160 from P H & P E Skinner.
