Report on trade: The largest Friday sheep sale of 2021 so far produced the highest prices we have ever seen for an entire entry of store and breeding sheep. This has been the trend of 2021, so it comes as no surprise, but it is still great to see the confidence in the sheep industry once again and to see all vendors in the different sections well rewarded for their work.

In the store lamb section, we saw a similar average price of £86 all through but this included more native bred lambs this week. Top spot on the day was taken by S Weeks & Sons for their pen of Beltex crosses at £107. Most lambs were selling in excess of £80 with only a very few longer term types and rams selling below £75.

This weeks sale included the show and sale of ewe lambs, principally Suffolk x Mule with  grand quality runs penned by 9 flockmasters. Top run on the day, which included the 1st prize winning pen were from D Howard Farms whose 500 sold to £132 and averaged £124.45. R Price & Sons and E & M E Brundrett saw their top pens make £120 and runs average £110 and £109. W J Hurley’s top pen made £117 and M A & F W Owen £116.

Show Results 1st D Howard Farms Ltd, Brede £132 purchased by R Brendon, Hallworthy; 2nd  R Price & Son, Sellinge sold for £120 to S T Phillips, Dover and 3rd E & M E Brundrett, Charing sold for £120 again to S T Phillips. The competition was judged by Ricky Brendon (Cornwall)

The ewe teg section highlighted how confidence is running high in the sheep industry so and that demand for replacement ewe tegs is strong this autumn. Supplies nationally are at a low point after higher finished hogget prices in the spring which have taken many ewe lambs out of the system. Similarly, last summer’s desert conditions will have reduced the numbers farmed through in the region.

Overall this was a very firm trade with the Suffolk x Mule tegs slightly easier to sell than the North Country Mules. Some outstanding Suffolk x Mules from the Andreozzi family sold to £205 with their others £184 and £180. Generally, Suffolk x Mules made £150 to £170 with another fine run from Stone Farms to £178 and then £177, £174 and £172.

The North Country Mules were in good condition and met a strong trade generally making between £155 and £175 topping at £180 for strong dark headed types from Court Garden Farm and £175 from D W Page & Son.

A smart pen of Llyens from H J Skinner Ltd sold at £165.

A good sized entry of breeding ewes this week with a few flock reduction sales taking place from A A Palmer, Porchester Farms and D Moss. Aged Mule ewes sold to £134 from Porchester with A A Palmer selling similar sheep to £125. One crop Lleyn ewes from D Moss sold to £120.
