Tuesday 13th November - Sussex Cattle Society's Autumn Show and Sale of Pedigree Sussex Cattle

The Sussex Cattle Society's Autumn Show and Sale of Pedigree Cattle (rescheduled from for middle of October) was a bright spot for breeders of cattle in the South East where a lot of the other farmers in the livestock sector are struggling with Blue Tongue regulations and the threat of more FMD restrictions to "help" the rest of the country.
Cows and calves opened the sale with 750 gns securing a strong 2000 cow with registered heifers calf.
Bulls found selective demand with the Hinds form Mayfield selling Mayfield Red Admiral (an Red Aberdeen Angus x Sussex) bull from the herd books supplementry "Breed improvement" register making 1900 gns to new Sussex breeeders Colin and Laura Johnson from Cowden near Edenbridge and then the Buchanans selling younger Black Ven bulls at 1400 and 1500 gns.
Heifers were the highlight of the day showing continued strong support for native red breeds - 8 strong John Lewis, Isle of Sheppey heifers, all bought by the Rumseys of Icklesham near Rye for the Wetland Trust bar one the champion heifer, Holm Place Heedless 29th (born June 05) and in calf to Lyes Regent 2nd which was purchased by the Bannister family to go into their Dernwood herd at Waldron, near Heathfield in Sussex. A Poplars Heedless heifer made 960gns again to the Wetland Trust.
5 Buyers got stuck into the younger heifers - top call a Bramley family heifer, Great Bainden Iris 3rd sold again to the Johnsons at Cowden for 600 gns. The Bannisters sold a heifer for 560 gns to J H King and Son, Reigate and Henry Moorhead (Solicitor) from Smeeth near Ashford made the same price of Lily Vale Indigo 11th.
