The ancient and historic village of Chilham has a 15th century Square, 13th century Church and Castle dating back to 1174. The Castle was constructed in 1616 for Sir Dudley Digges. The Norman Keep of the Castle dating from 1174 was built for King Henry II but stands on foundations dating back to the 5th century and there is evidence of early Roman inhabitation. Most of the buildings in the Square and surrounding streets are white and black half-timbered structures some faced with brick. Almost all are listed buildings and part of a Conservation Area. Records of the Church of St. Mary date from 1280 but is believed to have been a church site since the 7th century.
